What’s in the box?

Last week I featured what the girl’s and little guy’s were doing.  This week I will feature what the older boys are up to.

Samuel & Isaac

Box 1–Is their bible reading, devotional stuff.  At times we will to hymn study and missionary study as well.  This week we will hold off on these because our focus will be elsewhere.

Box 2–Math is our focus this week.  Samuel will continue building speed and confidence with his multiplication and division facts.  Isaac is working on building speed in addition and subtraction and continuing to learn his multiplication and division.

Box 3–Samuel has been using The Phonetic Zoo for spelling this last year and just loves it.  For Isaac we take words from his reading for his spelling words.

Box 4–Because we are studying the Renaissance Samuel is reading Christopher Columbus.  Isaac listens and then narrates.

Box 5–We continue working through Learn and Master Piano.  We love this piano curriculum.

Box 6–This is a fun and easy Spanish curriculum.  Most of the time we work through the workbook together but the lessons are also on CD so the boys can work independently as well.  A very nice feature in our very busy household.

Box 7–We are just getting started with our guitar lessons and are loving it.

Box 8–We try and take a few minutes every day to nature study.  If we can’t go to a park we will forage around our gardens or even spend 10 minutes checking out who is visiting our bird feeder through the front window.

Box 9–This week we will be learning about Raphael, Martin Luther and Cortes and Pizarro.

Box 10–A fun way to work on handwriting skills is writing letters to friends and family.

Letter writing

Box 11–We continue our study of birds, in particular their wings and flight.

Box 12–We are working on increasing our reading time.  I spend at least 1 to 1 1/2 hours a day reading to the children but I especially want the boys to read on their own.  Now we do a lot of reading throughout the day in addition to school specific reading.  The boys will be working through reading lists from Robinson curriculum and Ambleside Online year 2 and year 4.

Specific reading

My best laid plans for my super planning day did not go as smoothly as I had hoped.  I will add more on what we are doing as I am able this week.  I am also hoping to get November’s meal calendar done tomorrow.  Until tomorrow.

What’s in the box for Samuel and Isaac?

I will post pics and descriptions of what they are working on later this week but I do what to show you the one new curriculum that we will be working of this week.

Both the boys have been struggling with their math facts.  So we will be taking a break from their regular math books and doing times tales this week.  We are all excited to start.

Our curriculum

We start back to school tomorrow.  I thought I was better prepared than I was or perhaps I just had too many “new” ideas.  Thankfully my husband had to get hay for the horses and the kids all wanted to go with him.  That gave me most of the day to get things lined up.  I am now prepared for this week at least.

Everyone has a nice new planner that helps us all stay organized and on track.  The girls planners on top are based on the Letter of the Week curriculum by Erica at Confessions of a Homeschooler.  Check out her site for great ideas, encouragement and great printables.  The boys planners, The Weekly Assignment Books for the Elementary Student and the Young Student, are the ones I designed this summer.  They made their own covers which I laminated for durability.

This will be the first time that we have a school room.  We have always just schooled on the dining room table or the couch.  It was not until this last spring when my husband moved his home office out of the house and into the church that for the first time in my life I have an office, a space I can call my own.  I have become very protective of this space and I have learned the value of having a place to call your own.  I am much more productive in my office.  (I will post later about my office.)  So we have taken over the dining room.  This is what we have so far.  There is still more that I want to do so I will be posting more as I get those done.

Science

With 4 children starting school tomorrow and two tiny tots I had more than I can put into one post.  I will update more later this week and update you all on how our week is going.
