Our Curriculum

We have 6 amazing children.  Below is a list of what we do with our children during the academic hours.

It may also be helpful to know that we using the Self-teaching method as explained by The Moore Formula, Joanne Calderwood and the Robinson Method.  We organize our school subjects using the workbox system created by Sue Patrick.  All the children use the workbox system.  To the right is a picture of the workboxes that we use (4 sets of 3 for each child–12 boxes.  Paul and Malachi only use 6 boxes each).  For a more detailed explanation of our school “room”, how we organize our “stuff” and our day please click on the highlighted words for posts on these subjects.  I would love to see how you organize your school and day.  Please add your link to this page and we can all learn and encourage each other.

The first thing that each of our children finds when it is school time (that is 9 am in our house Monday-Friday) is their weekly assignment book.  This is the one that Alexis and Olivya use.

I ordered the Student Planner from Well Planned Day.  I ordered the pdf downloadable version but next time I will order each child their own planner.  This will save me time and with 6 children that is a premium.

These (pictures to be uploaded soon) are the planners Samuel, Isaac and that I am using for the Paul and Chi.  I found them at Walmart.  I loved that they ran a full calendar year, instead of the school year and had lots of space available for writing in the days assignments.  I had originally thought I would combine Alexis, Olivya, Paul and Chi into one planner but quickly saw that would be impossible.  When I went back to get individual ones for each of the girls they had changed the planner to include times of day when it had been blank.  The Well Planned Day Planners provide that extra blank space and they are prettier.

We start out the day with our subjects that we do together.  Those include; Bible, Scripture Memory, Hymn study, Choir practice, Hymn writer and/or Missionary study, History (Mondays and Wednesdays) followed by geography study and Science (Tuesdays and Thursdays) followed by nature study and/or an experiment.  This takes about 1 1/2 to 2 hours Monday–Thursday.

Then each child is dismissed to their desk and is to consult their planners and/or workboxes.  The girls and little boys each begin to work on their workboxes for the day.   I go according to a schedule on working with each child on individual work (spelling, reading, math help, etc.) while keeping Malachi (the 2 year-old) focused on constructive things.

The following is a list of the subjects and resources we are using currently.  In the near future I will have a scope and sequence of what our children have used and will use in the future.  Stay tuned.
